STADIUM REVIEW

Eagle fans are the worst human beings on the planet. They are truculent and belligerent, will defend their team to the death, and are usually close to blackout drunk on game days. Or so I thought.

While the team’s fans were more aggressive than most, they weren’t as vile as I had expected. I wore an opposing team jersey to a game (something I am loathe to do, but the Eagles were playing my team, and wearing a Lions jersey usually begets more pity than scorn) and made it back to downtown Philly on the subway without having any human excretions thrown at me. Nobody peed on me in the stadium washrooms, and I didn’t get elbowed “by accident” once. (In fairness, I only put on the jersey once I was in the stadium, and not while tailgating in the more intimidating booze-soaked parking lots.)

Now I did learn some new profanity at the game itself, but it was directed to the home team’s sloppy play and the occasional missed call. Eagle fans may never let you forget how to spell E-A-G-L-E-S, but they were more like uncivilized fanatics rather than threatening psychopaths.

The stadium itself is in the South Philly Stadium complex and shares parking lots with the Phillies and 76ers/Flyers. By three hours before kickoff, the lots are full and the scene is hopping. The bars in the complex area are full early as well.

Concessions featured several local delights including the amazing Schmitter sandwich. Beer selection was good. The crowd was loud and into the game. And if hearing the theme to Rocky before Opening Kick Off doesn’t make you feel something, then you’re dead inside.

It ranks in the middle of the pack simply because the place lacked the relative Wow of many of the others. (Truthfully, you could probably randomly place any of the stadiums from 23 through 13, and I’d be largely OK.). But it’s a really good place to catch a game, Eagle fans and all.
